Meaning of BLACKPINK’s Music Video Setting New Records of “the First, the Shortest Time, and the Highest”

YG's girl group BLACKPINK has set new records again of being the first, recording the highest number of views, and doing so in the shortest time.
Only three days have passed since BLACKPINK released its new song “As If It’s Your Last”, and the group is already breaking records.

The music video views alone show that BLACKPINK is a monster rookie. In just five months after its release, the music video of “BOOMBAYAH” surpassed 10 million views, and the music videos of “PLAYING WITH FIRE” and “WHISTLE” surpassed the same mark in April.

BLACKPINK has three 10 million views music videos in just eight months after its debut. This is the first among rookies, and BLACKPINK did it in the shortest time ever.

The “As If It’s Your Last” music video received much media attention even before its release. YG Entertainment’s CEO YANG HYUN SUK revealed pictures of the behind the scenes of the music video shooting and raised expectations.

As expected, the “As If It’s Your Last” music video received phenomenal response upon release. In just four hours, the music video hit two million views and 10 million views in just 16 hours.

PSY’s “GENTLEMEN” music video also has the same record of posting 10 million views in just 16 hours, but for a group, BLACKPINK is the first ever.

As of 17:01 on June 24, the music video posted 20,000,101 views, and in just a day and 23 hours at that. The music video was also ranked No.1 on YouTube’s hottest new videos, demonstrating BLACKPINK’s huge popularity.

BLACKPINK became the first idol group, male and female, to surpass the 10 million mark in the shortest time and has the highest music video views in 24 hours after release out of all idol groups around the world.

BLACKPINK’s popularity is not just shown in its music video views. The song itself has swept the charts in and out of Korea and, for the first time for a K-pop girl group song, BLACKPINK’s new song took the No.1 spot on the iTunes charts of 18 countries. This is an unprecedented achievement.

The music video’s high number of views shows BLACKPINK is popular not only in Korea but also around the world. Although the group debuted less than ago, BLACKPINK has a wide fan base outside of Korea.

BLACKPINK recently told OSEN, “Our music video hit 10 billion views while we were on a break, so we didn’t have the chance to thank our fans. Thank you! We wanted to make a better music video this time and show our different sides. Our members can speak foreign languages, and we think this makes it easier for fans around the world to like us.”

There is no better word than “monster rookie” to describe BLACKPINK. The group is to hold Japan debut showcase in July, and many are wondering whether BLACKPINK will start to take the world by storm. Judging from what’s happening now, BLACKPINK’s debut in the global market does not seem to be very far off.
